Definition & How It Works
An expense tracker is a tool – usually an app like Meow Money – that records your spending and income so you can see exactly where your money goes.
What it does
- Logs each transaction with amount, category, and date.
- Groups spending into categories (food, transport, subscriptions).
- Shows totals, trends, and remaining budget over a period.
Why it helps
Tracking turns vague “I don’t know where my money went” into clear numbers. Once spending is visible, you can cut waste, stick to a budget, and reach savings goals. Many expense trackers also support multi-currency, recurring transactions, and CSV export for deeper analysis.
An expense tracker is the foundation of personal budgeting: you can’t improve what you don’t measure.
