What Is a Floating Window?

Definition & How It Works

A floating window (or overlay window) is a small UI layer that stays on top of whatever app you’re currently using, without leaving it.

Common uses on Android

  • A floating CPU/battery monitor that shows live stats while you game or browse.
  • A floating clock or countdown during focus sessions.
  • An assistive-touch ball (like Floating Assistant’s) with home, back, and quick shortcuts.

How it works

Android grants a special “draw over other apps” permission. Once allowed, the overlay renders above other content, so you get glanceable info or controls without app-switching.

Floating windows boost multitasking by putting always-available tools right on top of your screen.
